According to an updated report from the San Francisco Police Department, at around 6:36 AM Tuesday morning, a suspect was seen brandishing a knife at a person. Officers who came upon the suspect opened fire and the suspect fled into the Glide Memorial Church. The suspect surrendered to authorities after a more than fifteen-hour standoff and was safely taken into custody.
The suspect is reportedly still holding a knife.
The situation is ongoing. A SFPD spokesperson told KPIX that no one else is in the building and it's unknown if the suspect was injured in the officer-involved shooting. The standoff reportedly began after officers approached a man waving a knife. The suspect reportedly got into a confrontation with officers during the contact, the officers discharged their weapons, and the suspect fled into Glide Memorial Church.
Police say it appears the suspect is trying to sharpen the knife.
The suspect remains barricaded and armed with a knife.
Police say the suspect is still walking around with two knives.
Police have requested an ambulance for an officer sprayed with a fire extinguisher. The officer is having trouble breathing, but is alert and conscious.
Officers advise the suspect brought out the fire extinguisher again.
The suspect continues to pace around the kitchen holding two knives.
Police advise the suspect is speaking with the HNT unit.
Officers monitoring the suspect say he is in the kitchen of the church and holding a knife in each hand.
A Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) unit has arrived on scene.
Officers say the man is spraying the extinguisher.
Officers state the suspect is holding a screwdriver and a fire extinguisher and appears to be bleeding profusely.
According to police, the suspect was armed with a screwdriver that has since been recovered by officers. He was last seen fleeing into a nearby building.
Officers are working to clear people away from the scene.
