Gatorade Recall: 122K Cases Pulled in 37 States Over Undeclared Dyes

United States

Published · Updated

Summary

  • PepsiCo has recalled 122,021 cases of 28-ounce Gatorade after the FDA found they contain Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6 dyes not listed on the label.
  • The recall covers four flavors in the 28-ounce size only: Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange and Orange Zero. No other sizes or flavors are affected.
  • The FDA classified the recall as Class II on Oct. 2, meaning exposure may cause temporary or reversible health effects; serious harm is considered unlikely, but Yellow No. 5 can trigger allergic-type reactions, including asthma symptoms, in sensitive people.
  • The product shipped to 37 states including NY, NJ, PA, CA, TX, FL and IL.
  • To check a bottle, look at the code ink-printed on the plastic shoulder of the bottle just below the cap, not on the paper label.
  • Affected bottles carry a best-by date between APR 18 27 and JUN 08 27 and one of these lot codes: 072226 DT, 072426 TL, 072726 TL, 072926 TL, 073026 TL, 073126 TL, 080126 DL, 081026 TL, 082026 DL, 082126 OA, 082526 KM, 083126 DT, 090426 KM, 091026 DL, 091126 DL.
  • If your bottle matches, do not drink it; discard it or contact the retailer.

Timeline

Anyone who has an affected bottle should not drink it and should discard it or return it to the store where it was purchased.

PepsiCo has not issued a public press release about the recall, and the company has not yet responded to media requests for comment.

The FDA defines a Class II recall as one in which exposure to the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, and the chance of serious harm is considered unlikely. No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with this recall.

The affected Gatorade was distributed to 37 states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, Florida and Illinois. Based on the FDA's list, the recall does NOT include product sold in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming or Washington, D.C.

The products were recalled because they contain Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6, synthetic food dyes that were not listed on the label. Both dyes are approved by the FDA, but federal rules require them to be declared on packaging because Yellow No. 5 can cause allergic-type reactions, including asthma symptoms, in some sensitive people.

Consumers can find the lot code printed on the bottle and compare it against the FDA recall notice.

The recall covers four flavors sold in 28-ounce bottles: Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero. Fifteen lot codes are affected, all carrying best-by dates between April 18 and June 8, 2027.

PepsiCo voluntarily initiated a recall of 122,021 cases of 28-ounce Gatorade on September 25, and the FDA classified the action as a Class II recall on October 2. The recall remains ongoing.
