Summary

  • A hazmat incident involving nitric and phosphoric acid in La Habra, CA—near Los Angeles—has sent a toxic orange-yellow haze over the area, prompting authorities to order evacuations within a one-mile radius.
  • Firefighters and hazmat teams are working to isolate the leaking tank, and three people have been evaluated for injuries, although they later reported no issue.

Timeline

The haze originated from Shepard Bros, a vendor for food storage chemicals, per local reports.

The combination of chemicals can create corrosive and dangerous fumes when exposed to the skin, eyes, and when inhaled.

One person is reported to have minor injuries.

Reports indicate the smoke in the area may be toxic.

It's unclear if this is a fire or some kind of leak.

Video shows a yellow haze filling the air from some kind of hazmat incident. Avoid the area and do not go near the haze.

We have none on the south end, and just checked in with Engine 191, and those are the only three they have. Squad 49 was handling, and that was their update.

They're supposed to evacuate the area and people find shelters. But if your windows are closed and you can't use the a/c and fan because it would bring the fumes in.... nitric is corrosive. I hope everyone gets immediate help. Damn do we have to start keeping gas masks

Right?! I already keep water and a hand crank radio...guess I'll just add a couple of gas masks too. What a time to be alive lol
