Summary
- One person was killed and two others were critically injured in a shooting outside a funeral at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Kearns on Monday, officials said.
- Officers were already at the church when gunfire broke out on the south side of the building just before 11:30 a.m. According to police, funeral attendees had called earlier that morning and asked officers to be there because "there could be a problem."
- Officers found a man in the road with critical injuries. He was given aid at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
- Police then saw a second victim being carried to a vehicle, which fled when officers tried to intervene. After a short pursuit, the vehicle was stopped near 4700 South and 4000 West in West Valley City, and that victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A third victim was found critically injured at the church and also hospitalized.
- Nearby, three schools were briefly placed under secure protocols as a precaution. Kearns Junior High, West Kearns Elementary and David Gourley Elementary were secured around 11:30 a.m. and released by about 12:30 p.m.
- All of those involved are believed to be men, though their ages have not been released, police said. The shooting happened outside, and investigators said the incident appears to be isolated.
- Police are interviewing witnesses and are also looking into whether gang activity played a role. They said they have gathered "everyone involved" but did not go into details on a potential suspect(s).
