Summary
- Three men were killed and two teenage suspects are dead after a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday.
- The incident began earlier in the morning when police received a call about a runaway juvenile. During the investigation, the boy's mother shared that she believed her son was suicidal, then revealed that several of her weapons, her vehicle, and her son were all missing.
- He was accompanied by a companion, and both were said to be dressed in camouflage, which police noted was inconsistent with a suicidal person.
- Police began tracking the vehicle using license plate readers and dispatched officers to the area of a nearby mall. At 11:43 a.m. PT, an active shooter call came in at the mosque, and officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found three adult men dead outside the mosque before clearing the building.
- Shortly after, police received reports of a vehicle shooting at a landscaper a few blocks away. It is unclear if the landscaper was struck.
- Officers then located the two suspects nearby, found dead inside a vehicle with self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Officials said they were aged 17 and 18. The FBI bomb squad later cleared the vehicle.
- Multiple news sources have identified the 17-year-old suspect as Cain Clark.
- One of the victims was a security guard at the mosque, whose actions were believed to have been heroic, officials said. Multiple children and teachers who were inside the building were not hurt.
- Officials said they are actively investigating this as a hate crime, saying that there was "hate rhetoric involved." FBI agents recovered a "manifesto" sharing a broad hatred of various races, religions, gender and political parties.
- The FBI and ATF are assisting in the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with photos or video evidence to submit it to fbi.gov/islamiccenterofsandiegoshooting.
- The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in San Diego County, according to the organization's website.

Regardless of your beliefs, you should be able to go to your house of worship and not worry about being killed.
A HATE CRIME IS A HATE CRIME. No matter which religion. Praying for the victims 🙏
People died, and the only thing people put focus on is some shıtty political agenda and dumb ideologies. Not until one of these incidents takes one of your own, then you'll know what these people are going through. 😒
So true
It’s so sad we have a platform to alert us all. Yet we can’t seem to have any compassion for one n other. So much hatred and ignorance in our environments. So sad! Praying for everyone!
@prismaticallure I very much disagree. Our country’s ideals are good at their core and stand for continual progress (the whole strive for a more perfect union thing)… it’s the non tolerant on the political extremes, plus the handful of foreign trolls found throughout all social media platforms that promote hatred. These groups are the loudest, so it seems like there’s a lot of them, but back here in the real world… good, kindhearted, virtuous, and empathetic people by far outnumber them. 🤍 Go volunteer for a good cause and you’ll see them everywhere. Perspective outside of a chat room/the media is important, these platforms are all a business and they know drama sells.
