Published · Updated

Summary

  • Alen Zheng allegedly placed an improvised explosive device outside the visitor center at MacDill Air Force Base on March 10 and called 911 to report a bomb without giving a location.
  • The device did not detonate and was discovered six days later by an airman in a secluded area, with officials saying it could have caused significant harm. Investigators used phone data and surveillance to identify Zheng, who sold a vehicle tied to the case and fled the country, while explosive materials were later found in his home.
  • His sister, Ann Mary Zheng, was arrested after returning to the U.S. for helping him escape, sell the vehicle, and destroy evidence, and their mother was detained for deportation.

Timeline

His 27-year-old sister, Ann Mary Zheng, was arrested after returning to the U.S. and is accused of helping him flee, selling the vehicle, and destroying evidence, while their mother was detained for deportation.

Officials said the suspect sold a vehicle tied to the case, which had been cleaned but still showed explosive residue, before fleeing the country and remains at large.

Investigators linked Zheng to the device using phone data and surveillance video, and said explosive components were later found inside his home.

The device did not detonate and was found six days later by an airman. Officials said the device was potentially deadly and could have caused significant harm, and it was later transported for further analysis as investigators continued examining the case.

Authorities said Alen Zheng, 20, placed an improvised explosive device outside the base’s visitor center on March 10, then called 911 to report a bomb without giving a location.

Police lifted the shelter-in-place order and gave an "all clear" signal.

The threat came after a suspicious package investigation at the base. That investigation shut down the Dale Mabry gate and visitor center for hours on Monday. Officials later cleared the package, but the investigation into it remains ongoing.

Emergency crews responded. Base officials said they were taking the threat seriously but did not share details about security measures.

Officials closed all gates to inbound and outbound traffic. Families on base said they started getting alerts around 11 a.m. The base clinic also evacuated as a precaution.

Various social media posts are sharing images of the alert.

A "shelter-in-place" has been issued following reports of a bomb threat made towards a clinic at MacDill Air Force Base, according to Samdesk alerts.

That's crazy to think that an Air Force base didn't have any security enhanced.

So, their mom is a Chinese national who overstayed her visa. The brother and sister are apparently US citizens… but they were able to flee to China within 48 hours of placing that device on base? Can an American obtain a visa to enter China that quickly? If not, that would mean this was either planned or they’re both also Chinese citizens. We don’t know that detail yet, but if they are… China doesn’t allow dual citizenship. So that’d be interesting and potentially telling. 🤔
