Summary

  • A massive protest is underway in Downtown Minneapolis, and 20,000 people have reportedly signed up for an anti-ICE rally at the Timberwolves arena, the Target Center.
  • Outdoor protesters are braving frigid temperatures, and hundreds of Minnesota businesses are expected to close today as part of the protests against the immigration crackdown.

Timeline

Protesters are reportedly now inside the Target Center, a multi-purpose arena located at 600 N 1st Ave.

A general strike protesting ICE is underway. Officials expect business closures and service disruptions as part of the day of action. Hundreds of businesses and places of worship are reported closed or operating on adjusted hours.

Citizen video shows thousands of people marching through the streets.

Street closures and traffic delays are expected along the march route. Downtown Minneapolis could see congestion through the afternoon and early evening. Drivers should consider alternate routes. Expect slower travel times in the area.

A march is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at The Commons, with participants expected to walk about a mile to the Target Center, where an indoor rally is planned. Large crowds are likely along the route and near both locations.

A statewide day of action is planned for Jan. 23, with organizers calling for people to pause work, school, and shopping throughout the day. Events and gatherings are expected, and disruptions to normal routines, traffic, and business operations are possible.

@minneapolisUser1508999033 @minneapolisUser1508999033 True story: under President Obama, almost 1 million illegals were deported with Tom Holman leading the charge. the Obama administration tapped him to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement's deportation branch in 2013. During Homan's time at ICE under President Obama, the agency carried out record numbers of formal deportations. Obama gave Homan a Presidential Rank Award, the highest civil service recognition. This is the same Tom Holman currently dubbed as Trump’s Border Czar. Interestingly, there were more deportations under Obama than under Trump. But because it was Obama, no one bothered to report it and no one cared if families were separated.

@partying the same Obama that did nothing wrong during his term? Oops I forgot about Fast and Furious. Who gave cartels money and guns including the gun that killed an American?

SanRafaelUser195694007Jan 23 at 5:41 PM

Trying to understand 56 people died in ICE custody under Obama and he deported a record 3.1 million. Where were the protestors then? Obama awarded and rewarded Homan at that time. Where were you?

@SanRafaelUser195694007 There were protests. You just weren’t paying attention.

Blocking the hospital streets is silly

@MinneapolisUser957308004 Look who your dealing with, they’ll be the first to cry too when they have no help from police or that hospital.
