Summary
- The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts have released findings in their investigation of the mass shooting at Brown University and subsequent killing of MIT Professor Dr. Nuno Loureiro in December 2025, committed by Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown University doctoral student.
- Officials concluded that Neves Valente acted alone, and had no links to terrorism. His victims were "symbolic in nature," as Brown University and Dr. Loureiro represented his "personal failures and injustices he perceived were inflicted by others over time." In these attacks, Neves Valente was "likely able to overcome his shame and envy by using violence to punish those communities that he perceived contributed to his downfall."
- According to the findings, Neves Valente arrived in the United States in August 2000 on a student visa, enrolling in a doctoral physics program at Brown University before withdrawing in May 2001. He obtained lawful permanent residency in 2017 while living in Miami, where he briefly worked as a rideshare driver. At the time of the shootings, he was unemployed with no criminal record.
- Neves Valente said he began planning the Brown attack in 2022, acquiring a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire to store his two legally purchased Glock 9mm pistols. Following the shootings, he recorded audio and video confessions showing no remorse and providing no clear reason for his actions. He was subsequently found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Salem facility.
- The shooter's "transient lifestyle," long-term planning, and social isolation provided little opportunity for bystanders to report any suspicious activity—and since he lacked traditional support such as family, peers, and authority figures in his life, there was no one able to observe warning signs and contact police, officials said.
- On top of being driven by "an accumulation of grievances" throughout his life, Neves Valente's "inflated sense of self contributed to interpersonal conflicts in his life and led him to believe he was being treated unjustly, preventing him from reaching his perceived full potential," the FBI concluded in its statement. "The FBI believes the shooter experienced a failure to thrive, long-standing suicidality, and his current situation was incongruent to where he felt he should be at this stage in his life."
- Two students were killed and nine others were injured in the mass shooting at Brown University in December.

An FBI analysis of the motive for the shootings concluded "Brown University as a whole and Dr. Loureiro represented to the shooter his personal failures and injustices he perceived were inflicted by others over time. By attacking them, Neves Valente was likely able to overcome his shame and envy by using violence to punish those communities that he perceived contributed to his downfall."
The FBI discovered that both handguns used in the crimes were purchased legally by Mr. Valente, a legal permanent resident of Miami, FL, from a Florida pawn shop.
A report released by the FBI has concluded that the deceased suspect, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, was solely responsible with no link to any other actors in the shootings at Brown University and the killing of Dr. Nuno Loureiro in Brookline, MA.
Officials say the videos are being treated as evidence and are part of the ongoing effort to understand intent and decision-making. The analysis of the evidence is ongoing, and additional updates will be released as appropriate.
In the recordings, Valente spoke following the shootings, describing his actions and what he did afterward. Investigators say the videos show him expressing no remorse for the killings and focusing instead on himself. In the recordings, Valente referenced traveling and attempting to remain undetected for a short period following the attacks.
Authorities say they are continuing to examine evidence to better understand the suspect’s actions and motivations.
In the recordings, the suspect admitted he had planned the Brown University shooting for an extended period. Officials say the suspect did not provide a clear motive for targeting Brown University students or the MIT professor.
On Dec. 18, investigators executed a federal search warrant at a storage facility linked to the suspect. During the search, the FBI recovered an electronic device containing videos recorded by the suspect after the shootings. The suspect in the shooting died by suicide days before he was found, according to autopsy results released Friday. Claudio Manuel Neves Valente is believed to have died on Tuesday, a day after the shooting of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro and two days before authorities discovered his body.
The suspect in the Brown University shooting is also the man suspected of killing an MIT professor, officials say. The suspected motive for the killings has not yet been released.
Officials said they believe that the shooter and the professor knew each other. His motives are still pending investigation.
The link between the crimes was established in the last 24-48 hours, officials said. Valente was using a phone that obfuscated the ability to track it, and used credit cards not tied to his name. Officials noted that he was "sophisticated" in evading capture and hiding his tracks.
Along with other evidence, footage showed that Valente wore the same clothes after he allegedly murdered the professor when he entered the storage unit.
Officials said they linked Valente to the two crimes through the car, financial investigations, and videos.

Officials said Valente's last known address was in Miami. He flew to Providence in October and traveled throughout New England.
Officials said evidence visible from outside the car, including a satchel, mask, and clothing, matched the Providence crime scene. Investigators also found multiple license plates on the vehicle, making it harder to track. Valente was ultimately found dead in a storage unit he rented with a firearm near his thigh and another near his feet.
The suspect was reportedly found inside a storage unit at the facility, which is believed to be his own.
Officials say a witness who interacted with the suspect in Providence shortly after the shooting came forward to police and described the exchange. The witness reportedly asked Valente why he was near the university, and he accused the witness of harassment before running away.
Authorities are investigating possible ties between the suspect and the killing of an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday. Officials said they believe Claudio Neves Valente attended the same university in Lisbon, Portugal, as Nuno Loureiro, the deceased MIT professor.
Christina Paxson, the president of Brown University, said Valente was a graduate student at Brown between fall 2000 and April 2001, and took a leave of absence before withdrawing in 2003. The suspect likely spent time in the area of campus where the shooting occurred, given that he studied physics while enrolled at the university.

A 911 caller has reported an unconfirmed incident at 201 Thayer St.
After translating the videos from Portuguese to English, [federal officials released the transcripts.](https://www.justice.gov/usao-ma/media/1422471/dl?inline)
Immediately after the murder, he drove to the storage facility, which he had rented in November.
At some point while he was in Massachusetts, he switched plates on the rented Sentra to an unregistered Maine plate.
Between December 13th to 14th, Valente returned to Massachusetts. [On December 15th, he fatally shot Nuno Loureiro,](https://go.citizen.com/MzJUDZhUcZb) a 47-year-old professor at MIT, officials said.
In November, Valente rented a hotel in Boston, per officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts. He then rented a gray Nissan Sentra on December 1st, and on the same day he drove to the vicinity of Brown University, where his car was observed intermittently leading up to the shooting.
