Summary

  • Officials announced that the U.S. Secret Service uncovered and foiled a massive illegal electronic device network capable of crippling cell towers and jamming 911 calls across New York City.
  • “The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said.

Timeline

These devices reportedly had the capability of carrying out a wide range of telecommunications attacks.

The investigation uncovered more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards at multiple locations within a 35-mile radius of the United Nations.

“The potential for disruption to our country’s telecommunications posed by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said.

In a statement released today, the U.S. Secret Service announced it had "dismantled a network of electronic devices located throughout the New York tristate area that were used to conduct multiple telecommunications-related threats directed towards senior U.S. government officials, which represented an imminent threat to the agency’s protective operations. In addition to carrying out anonymous telephonic threats, these devices could be used to conduct a wide range of telecommunications attacks. This includes disabling cell phone towers, enabling denial of services attacks and facilitating anonymous, encrypted communication between potential threat actors and criminal enterprises."

I’m really surprised at how many people don’t even read beyond the headline. All of these crazy conspiracy theories are pretty much answered in the actual article posted. They are simply making PSA that they have concluded an investigation that uncovered a plot to disrupt communications and jam the towers and landlines and they found enough equipment distributed throughout the targeted area. A press release usually follows a public service announcement and then we will learn about the details. I know it’s hard not to be suspicious of EVERYTHING right now but it’s worse when folks react emotionally or even hatefully towards others because it’s always the loudest thing around. I’m not judging you or anyone else here but asking folks to read the details of the announcement before you read the comments or make one. I see the misunderstandings that occur when headlines get our attention but that’s the entire purpose of the headline to intice you into reading it?

Everything depends on internet now.. it would be so so bad if our grid goes out

@mollusk59 are you talking about internet or electricity? Society would fare better without the internet.

No one knows what to believe anymore. This is a great way to divide people and take control
