The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that took place in the West Valley Division on April 20, 2025, at approximately 5:55 p.m., they announced this week. According to the LAPD, officers responded to a report of a suspect armed with a handgun and trespassing while shouting obscenities in the 6400 block of Reseda Boulevard. An LAPD air unit arrived and observed the suspect with the firearm. The Tactical Flight Officer used the aircraft's public address system to order the suspect to drop the weapon, but the suspect responded by firing at the air unit, prompting a help call. Uniformed officers from the West Valley Area arrived and located the suspect inside an apartment complex. The suspect moved into an adjacent alley while still armed. Officers gave multiple commands for him to disarm, and a 40mm Less-Lethal Launcher was deployed but had no effect. The suspect then pointed his weapon at the officers and fired multiple rounds, leading to an officer-involved shooting. He was struck by gunfire and collapsed near his handgun. The suspect, described as an adult male, was taken into custody without further incident. Officers provided medical aid until Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. A Smith & Wesson six-shot revolver, containing six spent casings, was recovered beside him and booked as evidence. No officers or community members were injured in the incident. Identification and next-of-kin notification are being handled by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Police are requesting an additional unit to block southbound traffic on Reseda to manage the ongoing situation.
