If it was insured as the 2 family residence it was zoned for, but used as a mass dormitory/rooming house with way more than the legal stated occupancy, the policy ain't gonna pay out for what happenedโ€”especially if it was one of the transient shul students who caused it. (via a space heater/hotplate/cigarette/LiIon vehicle charging) If you misrepresent the building's usage in the homeowner's policy and something in the misrepresentation is the cause of the loss? You're sunk. Worse than that, cramming that many people in that building is a fire hazard on the face of it. Horiffic.
