Members of the FBI, National Security Council, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency participated in a closed-door briefing with US Senators on Wednesday. There is a growing concern over the “mind-boggling” hacking operation, reportedly originating in China. However, Chinese officials have denied these allegations. A Senate Commerce subcommittee will hold a hearing on the Salt Typhoon situation and how "security threats pose risks to our communications networks, and review best practices" on December 11.
U.S. government agencies are investigating alleged telecommunications hacking efforts referred to as “Salt Typhoon,” warning the public about the potential for a massive data leak. These attacks may have targeted major companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The FBI is advising iPhone and Android users to utilize encrypted messaging services, such as WhatsApp, Signal, or FaceTime, to help protect themselves against these threats.
Incident reported at Washington, DC.
