Summary

A 7-year-veteran NYPD officer was shot in the foot during a struggle with a domestic dispute suspect in Bed-Stuy on Wednesday morning.

This makes him the tenth officer in the department to be shot this year, according to Police Commissioner Sewell.

NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig provided the following information in a press briefing:

At around 8:36 a.m., police responded to 911 report of a domestic dispute at 277 Gates Ave.

The caller said a man known to the them was damaging the wall in an apartment and refusing to leave.

At 8:50 a.m., four police officers arrived at the scene. A man and woman met with the officers outside the building. After an investigation, officers determined they would arrest the man for damaging the property.

As the officers attempted to detain the suspect, a struggle took place, during which a shot was fired, striking one officer in the right foot.

The suspect then fled, gun in hand, eastbound on Gates Avenue for one block, then southbound on Bedford Avenue for one block, and then eastbound on Monroe Street.

Four officers from the 79th Precinct gave chase. Two in a patrol car and two on foot.

Two officers engaged the suspect in front of 184 Monroe St. Several shots were exchanged and the suspect was shot twice in the left thigh.

A total of six shots were fired by two NYPD officers. Five by one officer and one by the other.

The suspect fired a total of three shots, and three 9mm shell casings were recovered. One shell casing was found in front of 277 Gates Ave where the officer was shot in the foot, and two shell casings found outside 184 Monroe St.

Police recovered the suspect’s 9mm handgun. It was not reported stolen.

Medics transported the officer and suspect to local hospitals for treatment.

The 41-year-old male suspect, Raheen Joye, has 17 prior arrests in the state of Georgia dating from 1998 to 2014, including one for discharging a firearm in 2005 and criminal possession of a weapon in 2007. Additionally, he has an outstanding warrant for weapons possession in Troy, NY.
