Summary

  • An MTA bus was hijacked before crashing on the outskirts of Queens Thursday morning.
  • Officials said at a briefing that a 44-year-old man holding what looked like a pistol ran in front of the eastbound Q4 bus before boarding it at Linden Boulevard and 197th Street.
  • The driver opened the door to let passengers escape.
  • The suspect then told the bus driver he was being chased and ordered them to continue driving.
  • For the next 13 or so minutes, the driver continued on Linden Boulevard until reaching 232nd Street. That’s when the driver jumped out of the driver-side window.
  • The suspect then got into the driver’s seat and started moving, causing the bus to strike a utility pole. It came to a stop between 233rd and 234th streets.
  • At that time, the suspect exited the vehicle and was arrested by officers of the 113th Precinct.
  • Officials said that both the suspect and the bus driver were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No one else was injured.
  • Police also learned that the suspect’s weapon was an imitation pistol.
  • More than 850 customers lost power when the utility pole was struck.
  • Anyone who was on the bus or who has information has been asked by police to call the 113th Precinct or Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
