Reported · Updated · 63.0K Viewed
Summary
A teenager was killed and three adults—including a police officer—were injured in a shooting near the Moechella festival in Cardozo Sunday night, police said. Several other people were injured as a large crowd fled the scene.
At around 6 p.m., police responded to assist with crowd control at the Moechella festival on the 1400 block of U Street NW.
In a [press conference](https://twitter.com/DCPoliceDept/status/1538710713207865344?s=20&t=PRL_zKgrV9g51r_10DYrMA), MPD Chief Robert J. Contee III said the event did not have a permit, and "several hundred people" had gathered on the sidewalk.
Contee said a fight began but was quickly broken up. A short time later, he said there was a "secondary incident" and the crowd began to flee the scene.
The event was deemed unsafe and police, firefighters, and EMS personnel shut it down and cleared the area.
They then located several people who had been trampled and sustained injuries to the legs, feet, and ankles.
A gun was recovered from an individual at the scene, Contee stated.
A short time later, gunshots were fired near 14th Street NW and U Street NW, striking a 15-year-old boy, a police officer, and two adults.
EMS personnel transported the victims to area hospitals, where the officer and both adults are in stable condition and are expected to recover.
The 15-year-old boy was pronounced dead, Contee said.
Contee did not provide any suspect information or confirm if any arrests had been made.
Police recovered several more guns, including one from a victim of the shooting.
Contee said no police officers fired shots during the incident, which took place between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
He also stated the District Attorney's office would be looking into whether the organizers of the unpermitted event will face any charges.
An investigation is ongoing.
