Summary

An officer was slashed in the hand after attempting to wrestle two knives away from a man whom police had shot twice in Coney Island Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., an officer noticed a man exit a car parked outside a Coney Island DMV, wielding a large knife in each hand.

According to NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewall, one knife was 16 inches long with an 11-inch blade.

The armed man charged toward the officer, brandishing one of the knives, [Pix11 reported](https://pix11.com/news/local-news/brooklyn/nypd-officer-stabbed-suspect-shot-in-coney-island-source/). The officer put distance between himself and the suspect while waiting for backup.

Onlookers notified police, who gathered at the scene.

When backup arrived, the armed man walked towards them. An officer ordered him to drop both knives, but the suspect disobeyed and continued to come towards officers.

An officer then shot at him four times, striking him in the leg and shoulder.

The suspect fell to the ground, but continued to cling to the knives.

Officers attempted to wrest the knives from him in what NYPD Commissioner Sewall described as a "long, intense struggle."

During this struggle, an NYPD officer was sliced on the hand.

The suspect was detained and taken to a local hospital for treatment, where he was listed in stable condition.

The injured officer was also transported to a local hospital for treatment.

This investigation is ongoing.

Good job calling backup. If 1st officer never called in I bet citizen's would blame the cop as a killer even though the criminal carried 2 large knives and could have killed a pedestrian walking by. Good job the the NYPD. Just wish human being could understand when we are sleeping thenNYPD is awake to protect us.
