Summary

Two people were injured in a three-alarm apartment fire in Sunset Park caused by electric bike and scooter lithium ion batteries Monday morning, FDNY officials said.

At 7:07 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of a fire at 5401 7th Avenue, which houses apartments and the Xin Hao NY Inc Supermarket.

Upon arrival, crews located flames on the second floor of the four-story building. The fire had begun to spread to the higher floors.

In a press briefing, FDNY officials said there were electric bicycles in the supermarket on the first floor.

Crews removed the bikes from the building to prevent their flammable lithium-ion batteries from combusting. Hazmat units responded to further ensure the batteries did not catch fire.

At 7:23 a.m., a second alarm was called to request additional units to the scene. About 20 minutes later, the fire was elevated again, to a third alarm. In total, 150 FDNY members responded.

FDNY officials described the fire as "stubborn", and Citizen user videos captured large clouds of smoke billowing from the building.

Crews placed the blaze under control at 9:31 a.m., according to a tweet from the FDNY.

Officials said two minor injuries were reported.

One resident was treated by EMS personnel at the scene but declined transport to the hospital.

A firefighter was transported to an area hospital.
