An 11-month-old girl was hospitalized in stable but critical condition after a shooting in Bedford Park in the Bronx Wednesday evening, officials said.
The girl was sitting in the back seat of a parked car car near the corner of E. 198th Street and Valentine Avenue around 6:48 p.m. when an armed man ran by and fired at another man, police said.
Arriving officers found the infant’s mother holding the injured child.
In a press conference around 10:30 p.m., NYPD Deputy Chief Timothy McCormack said one bullet went through the vehicle, the back seat of the car, the cheek of the infant, and out of the other side of the vehicle, lodging in another car nearby.
Mayor Adams and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson pledged to work with violence interruptors, community groups, and elected officials from the federal, state and local level to address gun violence, illegal handguns, and the need for greater opportunities in the area.
Detectives are involved in an active search for the suspect.
