Summary
A teenage boy and a police officer were shot during an altercation in Belmont Tuesday night, police said.
At 9:30 p.m., six uniformed police officers in two unmarked vehicles were patrolling the area of East 187th Street and Lorillard Place.
The officers walked to 2356 Lorillard Place to "address a large, disorderly group” of at least seven people, officials said in a [press conference](https://twitter.com/NYPDnews/status/1483665625885016064?s=20).
Officers made commands for a 16-year-old boy to remove his hands from his pockets, but he did not comply.
NYPD officials said that after officers made several attempts to get him to remove his hands from his pockets, the boy began to “physically struggle with the officers.”
During the struggle, the boy’s gun fired once, striking him in the groin and an officer in the leg.
Both the boy and the injured officer were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The gun was recovered from the scene and police determined it had been reported as stolen.
No officers fired gunshots during the incident, according to officials.
