Summary

One person was killed and eight people, including five officers, were injured in an explosion and fire in the Bronx Tuesday morning, officials said.

The explosion occurred at around 11 a.m. at 869 Fox Street.

In a [press briefing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQTBSA3v3Ww), Mayor Eric Adams said police officers ran into a burning building next door to the explosion to help residents evacuate the home.

Police officers were able to rescue one woman from the home.

Upon arrival, crews saw that one building had exploded, destroying three units.

They searched the two adjacent buildings for any occupants, and did not find anyone remaining inside.

FDNY Chief John Hodgens said two women were in the building at the time of the explosion. Firefighters found them lying on the ground outside.

EMS personnel transported them to an area hospital, where one of the women was pronounced dead.

As of the press conference on Tuesday evening, eight people, including five police officers, had reported injuries. Two of those people were reported to be in critical condition.

Officials said all of the victims were in their 60s, and that they sustained “traumatic injuries” due to the explosion.

Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the explosion. Preliminary investigation indicates the explosion may have been related to gas.

Gas was turned off for the whole block.

The Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents.

Crews are continuing to search the building for evidence and are involved in an ongoing investigation.
