Summary
- A two-alarm fire broke out in a stationary shop in the East Village, causing heavy amounts of smoke late Monday afternoon.
- At about 4:39 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a commercial fire at 47 Avenue A, where the Essex Card Shop is located.
- Firefighters declared an “all hands” fire, which was quickly elevated to a second alarm, after arriving at the scene.
- Approximately 100 firefighters responded, according to Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and the fire was placed under control after about an hour.
- No civilians were injured, although there were conflicting reports of firefighter injuries. Levine and ABC 7 reported no injuries, but AM New York reported that two firefighters were treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening smoke-inhalation injuries.
- The Essex Card Shop, described by Levine as a “beloved local card shop,” was destroyed. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been organized by a family member on the store’s behalf with a goal of $50,000.
- However, the borough president said the damage could have been “far worse,” since the business manager was present and firefighters were stationed nearby.
- The cause of the fire is under investigation.
- According to a store manager’s comment to AM New York, the fire was in the back of the store.

Prayers to them it’s been a lot going on and I also wish it was a lot of fdny and ambulances for the fire in Bronx that killed 17 people from not getting proper heat from these landlords and management, it needs to be more understanding for those in need and going through rough time because of covid and this pandemic we’re all humans and need to keep these emergency pandemic orders locked until we all are at some kind of comfortably and back normal . MAY GOD BLESS AND PROTECT US ALL SO WE CAN ALL LIVE THIS LIFE AND NOT HAVE SO MUCH ANXIETY 🙏🏾
That is Essex Card Shop. Oh no. The owners are so wonderful.
I’ll pay you 1million dollars to hold the camera still
I live up the block and thanks to Citizen app I found out quickly without having to go outside. They are very kindhearted people who own the store.
