Summary

A man shot two officers who approached him Wednesday evening in Belmont.

The two officers, a man and a woman, were responding to a 911 caller's report of a man wielding a gun just after 8 p.m.

The officers arrived at 2045 Beaumont Avenue and spotted a man sitting on a stoop that fit the suspect description given by the 911 caller.

According to information provided by the NYPD in an official press briefing, the male officer requested that the man take his hands out of his pockets, at which point the suspect revealed a gun and opened fire.

The female officer was struck twice in the right arm as she fired at the assailant five times.

The male officer was struck in the armpit as he physically engaged the gunman and wrestled him to the ground.

After the exchange, which reportedly took place in seconds, officers apprehended the man before he was transported by EMS to an area hospital with two to three gunshot wounds. He is expected to survive.

Both officers were hospitalized and their injuries are not apparently life-threatening. They were described as being in "good spirits."

The firearm recovered at the scene was found to have been stolen last year in Georgia.

The assailant was described by an NYPD official as a "career criminal" with many arrests.

Police also stated that the full encounter was captured on body cameras. A further investigation is ongoing.

That entire section from southern blvd, prospect, crotona and beaumont are cancer that is destroying the neighborhood. For decades that section is full of drugs, gangs and violence. Nothing has been done to clean up that place. Stop n frisk was working. Somethig has to be done to clean up the shit hole. Cant even walk around that area pass midnight because something always going on. Arthur ave at times, you have bunch of lowlifes hanging around the neighborhood that they dont belong and robbing hard working ppl at 4a-5a. Sick and tired of this shit. Us the community have to start fighting back and win back our neighborhood and cooperating with police.

I been to thousands of emergency calls as an EMT since 1982 worked with many cops over the years. I have seen the cops take care of people. This bull crap that cops are the enemy is just plain wrong. I have been stopped and I showed respect. They break everyones balls. Fact is cops shoot more white people than black people. Putting people back on the street who commit serious crimes is screwed up. Committed my life to care for my patients. I don’t want to go to another sad call when someone looses their family. Just lost my family. This shit sucks … put the guns away. Time to chill. Shooting is not the answer. Peace to everyone on Citizen.
