Summary

A child was killed and a woman was critically injured during a basement fire in Washington Heights early Saturday morning, officials said.

At around 1:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire near the corner of Wadsworth Avenue and W 178th Street.

Immediately, Citizen users began to go live from the scene showing smoke rising up from the basement as firefighters arrived.

FDNY crews quickly got to work extinguishing the blaze.

During the operation, firefighters discovered a 7-year-old boy and a 54-year-old woman who had been injured, the FDNY reported.

Medics at the scene pronounced the boy deceased and transported the woman to an area hospital where she was listed in critical condition.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze which had spread through the basement and 1st floor of the building.
