Man in Custody After Exchanging Gunfire With Officers

Officers from multiple police departments alongside SWAT personnel were able to resolve a standoff with a gunman described by police as a "person in crisis" on Monday afternoon in Oakdale. Police were alerted to a report of gunshots near 900 Greenway Avenue at around 2:40 a.m. According to a press release from the City of Oakdale, Oakdale PD officers arriving on scene encountered a man in distress on the third floor of a building and engaged in conversation with him from a parking lot. Washington County PD and Woodbury PD officers in company with SWAT personnel arrived to assist while negotiators conversed with the man as he poised himself near a third-floor window. The man, wielding a handgun, opened fire during the standoff and officers from multiple departments returned fire. After he retreated from the window, the man relinquished his gun and negotiators convinced him to surrender. Nobody was injured in the exchange of gunfire, though the man sustained minor wounds caused by broken glass. Students and teachers in Tartan High School and Oakdale Elementary nearby were locked down during the incident and released once the scene was secure around 5:00 p.m. The man, a 32-year-old Oakdale resident, was transported to Regions Hospital once in custody and is awaiting charges following further investigation by police.
