Summary

A 9-year-old boy died in a fire in Ozone Park early Wednesday that was caused by a charging battery for an electric bike, the FDNY confirmed.

At about 2 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 81-19 102nd Rd.

Firefighters confirmed a fire in a basement residence of a three-story house. Heavy smoke conditions were reported throughout the building.

At about 2:33 a.m., firefighters declared that the fire had been extinguished.

Between nine and 10 people were rescued from the building with minor injuries, according to [reports](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/9-year-old-boy-killed-in-ozone-park-fire-10-others-rescued/3250580/).

A nine-year-old boy who lived in the basement residence did not survive.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the fire was caused by a charging batter for an e-bike.

The official also stated that the victim’s family moved into the apartment the day before.

Nigro said that the latest death is the third this year caused by lithium ion batteries charging e-bikes.

A smoke alarm was not present in the residence.

In response to the fire, the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit set up a table to share safety info in front of Golden Farms Supermarket at 101-16 77th St. in Ozone Park.

The department also posted tips lithium-ion battery tips on their [Instagram page](https://www.instagram.com/p/CTSKJ9tnuIJ/). Read more at [fdnysmart.org](http://http://fdnysmart.org/).
