Summary
Firefighters extinguished a four-alarm fire that tore through a commercial building Thursday morning in Sunnyside, Queens. Three firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
On Friday morning, the FDNY announced that the fire was due to electrical wiring. A smoke and fire alarm were present.
A [GoFundMe fundraiser](https://www.gofundme.com/f/sunnyside-fire-relief-for-small-businesses) by the non-profit Sunnyside Shines to assist businesses and workers affected by fire has raised nearly $30,000 as of Friday afternoon.
The fire was reported at approximately 7:18 a.m. at 45-08 44th St,, where the grocery store Taiyo Foods is located.
At approximately 8:21 a.m., a fourth alarm was transmitted, indicating the need for additional units.
At about 8:55 a.m., firefighters advised that the fire was extinguished.
The full extent of damages is not known at this time.
A spokesperson for Sunnyside Shines said that the building was not condemned by the Buildings Department and that at least some of the businesses hope to reopen in a period of about 6 months.
The FDNY said in a statement that units responded to the scene in four minutes.
When firefighters arrived, there was fire in a Japanese restaurant with smoke pushing out.
The fire spread to a total of five businesses within a commercial building, but was contained to just that building, despite earlier reports to the contrary.
There were non-life-threatening injuries to three firefighters and no one else. Further details about the firefighters’ injuries were not available.
The statement added that severe heat conditions added to the challenge of fighting the fire.

SHIT NOT TAIYO FOOD I GO THERE ALL THE TIME
@NRRX gg bro
If there is a fire in Sunnyside the whole block usually burns down
@winputig2 due to the nature of what’s called a Taxpayer Building where the air shafts are shared among a block of buildings
Ah damn, that area has a history of fires
@y0urmama lmao
From what I can see, nobody was injured. I don’t think Taiyo opens until 10 AM. They did have to smash the front windows and I think they were drilling the basement gates open. More police and fire are coming to the scene. It looks like the fire has spread to a second location. I’ll film another video in a second.
@chinatownchaos thanks bruh
