One Dead in Four-Alarm Fire on Building Rooftop After Explosion

The incident began at about 10:25 a.m., when firefighters were alerted to a report of fire and the sound of an explosion at a six-story apartment building 73-01 41st Ave.
Video taken by Citizen users showed heavy amounts of fire within a structure on top of the building.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the fire and that an explosion had occurred within a penthouse structure that had been under construction.
The fire chief raised the fire to a fourth alarm nearly three hours into the incident to relieve and assist the assigned units in combatting fire on the sixth floor. More than 140 firefighters have responded.
In an update early Tuesday afternoon, the FDNY said damage to a penthouse structure and the top floor has caused a collapse and “very unstable situation.”
Two buildings behind the main fire structure have been evacuated, in addition to the building where the fire is located.
Four firefighters have suffered minor injuries, in addition to one person who was located and pronounced dead.
The department said it would be working with the Department of Buildings to develop a plan concerning structural stability.
According to a radio update, the DOB reported finding a compromised wall.
