Summary

A driver was arrested after driving through a crowd of protesters in Greenwich Village Wednesday night, injuring one person, police said.

Demonstrators had gathered near Bleecker Street and West 10th Street, and by 10:20 p.m. they had blocked the roadway with bicycles, NYPD officials said.

Officials did not confirm why the protesters were gathered.

A vehicle approached the crowd and the driver, an 18-year-old man, began honking the horn and attempting to pass them.

Police said the demonstrators surrounded the car, and the driver accelerated through the crowd, injuring one man.

The victim, also an 18-year-old man, was treated by EMS at the scene for an injury to the knee that is not life-threatening.

Officers stopped the suspect vehicle near Grove Street and West 6th Street and took the driver into custody at 10:24 p.m.

Officials said numerous charges are pending against the man, including leaving the scene of an accident with an injury, reckless endangerment, obstructing governmental administration, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, and a windshield violation.
