Summary

Residents of a Prospect Heights brownstone were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after an entry archway collapsed, officials said.

At around 4 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a structural collapse at 626 Carlton Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a decorative archway had collapsed, compromising the entryway to the building.

According to a report from the Department of Buildings (DOB), all tenants were given a Vacate order and were offered emergency relocation assistance by the American Red Cross.

A Partial Vacate order was also issued for the front yard of a neighboring property.

The DOB issued the property owner a violation for failing to maintain the archway and ordered them to install a sidewalk shed in front of the building.

Additionally, the DOB ordered the owner to hire a Professional Engineer to assesses the structure.

I was there when it happened. No one hurt fortunately. Pediment just came down and took out the stairs. Happened in the blink of an eye. The brownstone does not look bad at a distance but when you look more closely you can see signs of disrepair elsewhere on the facade.
