A 57-year-old former police officer and a 53-year-old former corrections officer attempted to intervene, confronting the 33-year-old, officials said.
A physical fight ensued between the three men, continuing out of the restaurant and down the block.
During the course of the struggle, the former corrections officer drew his firearm and discharged it, striking both of the other men, an NYPD statement said.
The retired police officer was shot in the torso and the 33-year-old was struck in the arm.
EMS responded and transported both victims to the hospital. The officer was later pronounced dead and the 33-year-old was in stable condition.
No arrests have been reported. The incident remains under investigation.

I cannot even tell you how terrible it is to read the insensitive comments here... I’ve been checking the feed all night because we were afraid our neighbor was the one who was shot. Confirmed, he is the retired cop. He was a sweet guy who really looked out for people in the neighborhood, he knew all the store owners and this is likely why they called on him to help.
