Summary
An NYPD officer was shot three times as officers responded to a fatal triple shooting in Bushwick late Wednesday night.
In a Thursday morning briefing, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said the officer is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect was also struck once by the officers and apprehended.
At approximately 11:11 p.m., two uniformed police officers and a sergeant from the 81st precinct in an unmarked patrol car responded to a report of shots fired in the 83rd precinct a few blocks away, at Madison Street and Broadway.
Shea said that a review of surveillance footage showed that a man approached a white SUV which was occupied by three men and opened fire. The vehicle crashed a short time later.
A 28-year-old passenger inside the vehicle was killed, the 21-year-old driving suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound, and a 22-year-old passenger was not injured. Police said the three were all known to police as gang members with an extensive arrest history.
A few minutes later, and five blocks away on the edge of Saratoga Park, Shea said, the officers observed a man walking briskly and "blading his body," which is a law enforcement term for taking a defensive stance. As the officers exited their vehicle, the man reportedly drew a firearm and started shooting at the officers.
Two of the officers returned fire, Shea said. One officer fired 12 rounds; the other nine rounds.
The officer who fired nine rounds was struck three times by the suspect. One bullet struck his bulletproof vests; a second hit his right leg; and a third struck his buttocks.
Shea said the officer is doing well and expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect was struck once in the leg and arrested at the scene. Police also recovered a firearm.
Shea said the perpetrator is a 26-year-old man and known gang member.
Shea said that all information released Thursday was preliminary and that there is an extremely active investigation at the two shooting scenes. He said that investigators are working to determine if the two incidents are related.
