Summary

  • Three firefighters were injured in a four-alarm commercial blaze in Queens Village early Saturday morning, FDNY officials say.
  • At 2:18 a.m. firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 111-46 Springfield Boulevard.
  • When firefighters arrived, there was already a large fire in the building, according to FDNY Assistant Chief Joseph Jardin.
  • In a press briefing, Jardin said a firefighter quickly made access to the roof and observed fire in the rear of the building.
  • Citizen user video showed massive plumes of smoke rising from the building and spreading throughout the neighborhood as firefighters filled the street.
  • Firefighters then reportedly opened the metal roll-down security gates to access and assess each of the three businesses, and confirmed there was a large fire in the middle unit that extended to the rear of the building and into the space between the ceiling and roofline.
  • The blaze was eventually raised to a fourth alarm, and over 200 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene in total.
  • As firefighters made entry through the rear of the building and began working to extinguish the blaze, the roof collapsed, trapping two, said Jardin.
  • A mayday transmission immediately went out and firefighters began an assist and search team effort.
  • The firefighters were found under a heavy section of roof that was involved in flames.
  • The team quickly worked to free the trapped firefighters from the debris and remove them from the building.
  • Both were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening. One of the firefighter's injuries included burns, Jardin stated.
  • Firefighters were then able to resume their attempts to extinguish the blaze.
  • The fire was deemed under control at 5:27 a.m., more than three hours after they arrived at the scene.
  • A third firefighter reported minor injuries and was treated by EMS.
  • The cause of the fire is under investigation.
