Summary
Seven people, including five firefighters, were injured by a 4-alarm blaze in a University Heights apartment building on Sunday night.
According to Assistant Chief John Hodgens, "our units were here within four minutes” and discovered a fire in a top floor apartment on 183rd Street just after 8 p.m. that was being driven by heavy winds.
The blustery conditions reportedly helped the fire spread into two additional apartments and into the space between the apartment ceiling and the building’s roof.
Firefighters battled the blaze from inside of the building and could be seen in Citizen user video using tower ladders to reach the top-floor apartments.
Assistant Chief Hodgens reported that “everybody was evacuated” from the 11 apartments on the top floor of building.
The Assistant Chief also indicated that two civilians suffered minor injuries. A [local news report](https://www.amny.com/new-york/bronx/residents-displaced-by-massive-four-alarm-fire-at-bronx-apartment-building/) citing FDNY officials indicated that five firefighters were injured during the effort. Two of the firefighters are reportedly suffering from serious injuries.

Firefighters are having difficulty closing a hydrant used to provide water to the fire.
EMS units update that seven people are injured, two firefighters with moderate-but-not-life-threatening injuries, three firefighters with minor injuries, and two civilians with minor injuries who were released at the scene. All the firefighters were transported to local hospitals.
“Our units were here within four minutes. We had fire in one of the top floor apartments that was driven by a heavy wind condition. Fire spread to two additional apartments and into the space above the ceiling. Units did an interior fire attack and we set up exterior streams with our tower ladders. We had to work aggressively and we were able to knock most of the fire down relatively quickly. There were 11 apartments on the top floor and everybody was evacuated. We have two minor injuries to civilians," says FDNY Assistant Chief John Hodgens in a statement.
Fire units declared the fire is under control after two hours and seven minutes on scene.
Unneeded EMS units are beginning to be released from the scene.
EMS units on scene advise that fire operations are beginning to wind down and firefighters believe they can complete their work with the units currently on scene.
