Eight Injured After Car Struck Outdoor Dining Area

A driver was arrested after multiple collisions which injured eight people, including two children at an outdoor dining area, on the East Side of Manhattan Friday morning.
The mayhem began shortly after 8:30 a.m. at E. 50th Street and 2nd Avenue, in Turtle Bay.
Police say that a van traveling southbound on 2nd Avenue struck a Toyota Camry, causing that vehicle to plow into a scaffold and outdoor dining seating area. A 5-year-old and a 7-year-old were struck by debris from the structure, a police spokesperson said.
Police said the van then continued southward for another block and ran into a fruit stand at E. 49th Street, striking three adults.
In total, eight people were injured, which may possibly have included two people inside the Camry, police said.
All of those injured were transported to area hospitals with minor, non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Officers took the driver into custody pending charges.
According to a report from ABC7, the driver suffered a medical condition while detained.
Detectives are involved in an ongoing investigation.
