Vandalism Suspect Critically Injured in Shoot-Out With Police

A man was critically injured in a shoot-out with police after being confronted for spray-painting a building Sunday morning in the South Bronx, police say.

In a press briefing, Chief of Department Terence Monahan provided a preliminary account of the incident.

At 12:35 a.m. on Sunday, two uniformed police officers and a uniformed sergeant approached two men who were spray-painting graffiti on 677 Elton Avenue.

The men fled, engaging officers in a foot pursuit.

An officer then grabbed one of the suspects and a struggle began as the officer attempted to make an arrest. Monahan said at this time, the suspect brandished a semi-automatic handgun and fired at least three shots at police.

Monahan stated all three officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

He was transported to an area hospital where he is reportedly in critical condition.

None of the officers were injured during the incident, though they were transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

The suspect's gun—which was damaged by police gunfire—was recovered at the scene.
