Summary
Two children were returned safely to their parents after they were taken in an idling minivan while their father made a food delivery in Pacific Heights Saturday night, officials stated.
Around 8:45 p.m., police received a report that a man had stolen a gray Honda Odyssey with a 1-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl inside.
The children's father left the car in the street while delivering a food order near Jackson Street and Laguna Street. When the man returned to the vehicle, he saw a man driving away with his children inside.
According to KABC, the father said, "I yelled at him and told him to get out and two of my kids are in the car." He also shared that the children only speak Mandarin.
An Amber Alert was issued and the San Francisco Police Department's entire swing shift of nearly 100 police officers worked overtime to search for the stolen vehicle. Police departments across the city received tips throughout the night as social media users shared the story.
Four hours later, around 1:15 a.m., two officers involved in the search found the minivan on the 1200 block of Fitzgerald Avenue. The missing girl and boy were inside the vehicle.
In a news conference, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott hailed the department's "team effort in a crisis situation" to bring a "successful resolution."
As a precautionary measure, police transported the children to an area hospital for a medical evaluation before reuniting them with their parents.
A GoFundMe was created for the family, which has raised more than $80,000.
The investigation is ongoing. However, no arrests have been made.
According to KPIX, Scott encouraged the driver to turn himself in and stated, "We won't give up until we find you."
Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD's tip line at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411 and start the message with "SFPD."
