Officer Wounded, Suspect Apprehended After Gunfire Exchange Near Bruckner Plaza in Soundview

UPDATE: NYPD Officer Daniel Vargas, who was injured when a suspect shot him in the back late Tuesday night has been released from the hospital.

An NYPD officer is expected to make a full recovery after he was wounded in an exchange of gunfire Tuesday night in the Soundview section of the Bronx, officials said. The suspect was arrested and his gun was recovered.

At around 10:30 p.m., a 31-year-old officer with the Gun Violence Suppression Division made contact with a 24-year-old suspect near Lafayette Avenue and White Plains Road.

According to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea, within seconds of the encounter, gunfire broke out. The suspect fired four rounds and the officer fired one.

The officer was struck in the lower back just below his bulletproof vest.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and immediately transported the officer to Jacobi Hospital where he was last listed in stable condition. The suspect was taken into custody and his gun was recovered by police.

“I can tell you that he’s in a lot of pain, but thankfully we expect him to make a full recovery," Shea said of the injured officer.

Chief Terence Monahan wrote on Twitter, "By the grace of God, our brother in blue will go home to his family after he's released from the hospital."
