Summary
A police officer shot a vehicle theft suspect in Jamaica Thursday night after the driver rammed the car into an NYPD van, police said.
The 28-year-old man is in stable condition at an area hospital. A 21-year-old man who was operating the vehicle is also in custody.
According to an NYPD statement released hours after the incident, police initially received a 911 call of a fight at 125-17 101st Ave. When officers arrived at the scene, they met a man who claimed that two men stole his car after he left the keys inside.
Officers tracked the victim’s phone – still inside the vehicle – and spotted the car with two men inside at 97th Avenue between Allendale Avenue and Liverpool Street.
Police said that as officers began to approach the vehicle, the driver accelerated in reverse at high speed into the NYPD van.
One officer fired their weapon, striking the passenger in the chest. Police said he was removed to an area hospital in stable condition.
Video taken by a Citizen user apparently showed the driver being arrested.
No police officers were injured. An internal investigation into the use of a police firearm is underway.
Police have not confirmed what charges will be brought against the suspects.
