Summary

A Tuesday afternoon shootout during a domestic violence call in Springfield Gardens landed two NYPD officers in the hospital and left a suspect dead, police say.

According to officials, on Tuesday morning a 41-year-old woman went to the 105 precinct station house to report a domestic violence incident from the night before.

At around 12:40 p.m. the woman was escorted by two officers to her home located at 145-86 179th St.

Police say about six minutes later the suspect entered the house and immediately shot at the two officers.

Both officers were struck by gunfire and immediately returned fire, killing the suspect.

One officer was struck in the right upper thigh and as of Tuesday afternoon was in surgery for a fractured femur.

The other officer was shot at least once and suffered injuries to both of his hands.

Both officers are awake and stable.

Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old CUNY peace officer Rondell Goppy.

Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a press conference outside of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center that Goppy was a licensed firearms handler and had no criminal history.

Multiple guns were recovered from the home.

In the same press conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio praised the actions of the responding officers.

“Because those officers were there, that woman is alive,” said de Blasio.

Police are investigating a series of prior domestic violence calls at the address of the shooting.
