Summary
A 61-year-old man was arrested after he set a fire inside an apartment in Manhattan Saturday evening, police say.
Officers initially responded to the East Harlem building near 5th Avenue and W 135th Street for a 911 call of a restraining order violation.
When units arrived, they discovered that the man had locked himself inside the apartment with an individual, actively violating the order of protection.
Around 5:30 p.m., FDNY personnel responded after the man set a fire inside the residence. User footage showed flames bursting from the apartment window.
Multiple adjacent apartments had to be evacuated as a result, according to radio transmissions from firefighters.
Units were soon able to make their way into the apartment, where police arrested the man.
The suspect—a 61-year-old man who police say is homeless—faces charges of burglary, arson, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and criminal contempt.
The FDNY said that five civilians and two NYPD officers were injured during the incident. They were all taken to nearby hospitals, where their condition was not specified.
The fire was extinguished a little before 6 p.m.
