Summary
One hundred taxis covered the Brooklyn Bridge Thursday afternoon, as members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance held a protest seeking forgiveness from debts incurred during the city's lockdown.
Just before noon, a large group of demonstrators from the New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) gathered in front of City Hall and held a press conference, demanding debt forgiveness from the city. Drivers cited the extreme losses in income during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that now 80% of yellow taxi drivers face food insecurity. They continued to speak about the debts accrued by the purchase of the NYC taxi medallions, which can cost over $100,000.
Shortly after the press conference, as many as one hundred taxis began driving onto the Brooklyn Bridge before stopping their vehicles and blocking traffic. Many demonstrators bearing signs left their vehicles while others honked in support of the protest.
At approximately 2 p.m. another group of taxis blocked off the Queensboro Bridge.

Funny how they on the bridge to the borough they never wanna go to 👊🏽🤦🏾♀️
@Bella_Meia So right!
They were racist against black and brown ppl. I remembered when I used to flag yellow taxis and they would pass me by. And one day I had to get a yellow taxi for my white old man patient and he asked me why is it taking me so long to get a taxi? LOL I told him because I was black and they don’t stop for black ppl. LOL true story. Now I can just order an Uber with no problem
@guardboy98 You can’t demand payment in advance - unlawful. But maybe there oughta be a law to have people pay upfront. Then? No profiling needed.
They so mad at Uber but hey it’s more convenient and they don’t deny rides to Brooklyn lol
@vidasworld how about Uber doesn’t deny black ppl rides period! Yellow cabs rarely stopped
Debt forgiveness??? LMFAO. I want that too. Lol.
@rsymington Word... let’s go block some traffic lol
