Woman Rescued From East Rockaway Inlet

Summary

A distressed swimmer was rescued Friday morning after she was swept out to sea off the coat of East Rockaway, in a joint operation by special police and fire department units.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., Queens firefighters and NYPD's Aviation Unit responded to a 911 call of a person in the water near Seagirt Blvd & Beach 20th Street. The woman was located by an Aviation Unit helicopter, which dropped Harbor Unit SCUBA members into the water who helped remove her to safety. The operation lasted about 20 minutes.

Video by multiple Citizen members showed the operation, including the victim being lifted out of the water into the helicopter.

Officers on scene advised that the victim was conscious and alert. According to a later update from the NYPD, she was in stable condition at a local hospital. Police said she had been swept out of the inlet by a riptide.
