Summary

More than 100 people were arrested and 13 officers were injured after crowds descended on the Magnificent Mile and the Loop late last Sunday night. Windows were smashed and multiple stores were burglarized in the area.

Officials indicated that the events were in response to an earlier incident on Sunday where police exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect in Englewood. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Police said that a civilian and security guard were critically injured by gunfire at an unspecified location. Videos posted to social media depicted a chaotic scene late into the night.

There will be restricted access to the Loop from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. for the foreseeable future, according to Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department David Brown.

According to the Chicago Emergency Operations Center, the following closures were put into effect Monday night:

Access to the downtown area was restricted for people who do not live or work there. Police allowed these people access at Harrison Street, Chicago Avenue & Halsted Street, Roosevelt Road & Canal Street, Kinzie Street & Halsted Street, and LaSalle Street.

Lake Shore Drive was closed from Fullerton Avenue to I-55. All expressway ramps from Roosevelt Road to Division Street were closed in both directions.

CTA did not stop in the downtown area from Fullerton Avenue to 47th, and east of Halsted Street. Some buses were rerouted.

All downtown bridges were raised overnight except for:

* LaSalle Street

* Harrison Street

* The westbound lane of the Ida B. Wells / Congress Bridge

* Lake Shore Drive

* Columbus Avenue

* Kinzie Street

* Grand Avenue

Dude it’s enough. They aren’t doing any of this for justice, nor equality. The suspect fired at officers. Get the facts before you decide to destroy your city and even then destroying the city isn’t called for

Nothing says “take us seriously and we want to be an equal part of society” like robbing an Apple Store. C’mon people wake up and hold ourselves to higher standards. These criminals are bring us all down. All the people saying the stuff is insured and all, look at it like this; if I took your car would you be as calm and cool about it? No. In a perfect world resources would be distributed equally, but be real, if you had e money, not everyone is getting some. Stop lying to yourselves, work hard (legally), honestly. That’s what the city is built on.

@spider5656 amen, how do people think these stores “became insured”? Someone worked hard to build something, at the end of the day someone has to pay for that and yeah insurance companies could pay for it but they don’t have unlimited resources. Those companies go out of business, further making the unemployment worse and possibly with unresolved claims or their debt added to the deficit in someway as the US will bail those companies out. One way or another we all pay for all these deeds.
