TUESDAY, 10:55 PM: User @Skrap91 broadcast footage of a large smoke cloud and intense flames after what he described as an explosion in the distance. A large fire was soon confirmed at the Marathon Refinery in Carson; the nearby I-405 was shut down by police as LA County firefighters went to work on the inferno. According to the LACoFD, the fire originated from a cooling tower, and was preceded by an explosion. Refinery personnel attempted to depressurize their system while firefighters worked to reduce the size of the blaze. As units made progress, residual pressure from remaining flammable gas contributed to a prolonged operation. As of 3:39 AM, LA County FD reported that the bulk of fire activity had diminished, and Hazmat crews advise that there is no public threat in regards to air quality. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
An updated report from the Los Angeles County Fire Department states that some remaining flammable gas is contributing to a limited fire. Firefighters are continuing to make progress toward fully extinguishing the fire.
An update from a news outlet has reported I-405 is closed in both directions at I-110.

Officers are working to close traffic in the area.
California Highway Patrol officers have confirmed a large fire at the refinery off of I-405.
