Two Seriously Injured in Maintenance Hole Fire

10:02 AM, TUESDAY – Citizen reported that firefighters were responding to a report of a maintenance hole fire at 1905 Bay Ridge Parkway. Citizen user @Swingline76 captured footage of the flames shooting out of the hole, and firefighters working at the scene. Firefighters soon called for additional units to the scene to assist in putting out the flames. According to the FDNY, two civilians suffered serious injuries as a result of the fire. It’s currently unclear just how they got injured. Firefighters reported that the fire was caused by the bursting of a 12-inch gas main. There is no immediate threat to the surrounding area. ConEd responded to the scene and is working to manage the gas leak.

Firefighters report that ConEd workers are in the process of digging four separate holes to help contain the gas leak.

Firefighters report no elevated gas readings from surrounding properties, indicating no active threat to the public at this time.

A National Grid emergency response team has been requested to close the gas lines.

Firefighters now report that a 12-inch steel gas main erupted, feeding the active flame.

EMS personnel on scene report that two civilians were injured as a result of the fire and are in need of immediate medical treatment.

Units are checking surrounding properties for signs of spreading or power outages.
