The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts have released findings in their investigation of the mass shooting at Brown University and subsequent killing of MIT Professor Dr. Nuno Loureiro in December 2025, committed by Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown University doctoral student.

Officials concluded that Neves Valente acted alone, and had no links to terrorism. His victims were "symbolic in nature," as Brown University and Dr. Loureiro represented his "personal failures and injustices he perceived were inflicted by others over time." In these attacks, Neves Valente was "likely able to overcome his shame and envy by using violence to punish those communities that he perceived contributed to his downfall."

According to the findings, Neves Valente arrived in the United States in August 2000 on a student visa, enrolling in a doctoral physics program at Brown University before withdrawing in May 2001. He obtained lawful permanent residency in 2017 while living in Miami, where he briefly worked as a rideshare driver. At the time of the shootings, he was unemployed with no criminal record.

Neves Valente said he began planning the Brown attack in 2022, acquiring a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire to store his two legally purchased Glock 9mm pistols. Following the shootings, he recorded audio and video confessions showing no remorse and providing no clear reason for his actions. He was subsequently found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Salem facility.

The shooter's "transient lifestyle," long-term planning, and social isolation provided little opportunity for bystanders to report any suspicious activity—and since he lacked traditional support such as family, peers, and authority figures in his life, there was no one able to observe warning signs and contact police, officials said.

On top of being driven by "an accumulation of grievances" throughout his life, Neves Valente's "inflated sense of self contributed to interpersonal conflicts in his life and led him to believe he was being treated unjustly, preventing him from reaching his perceived full potential," the FBI concluded in its statement. "The FBI believes the shooter experienced a failure to thrive, long-standing suicidality, and his current situation was incongruent to where he felt he should be at this stage in his life."

The person of interest has been identified as a 24-year-old from Wisconsin, per reports. The individual, who has not yet been officially named as a suspect or charged, reportedly served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army.

As of 2024, the individual's residence was in Washington, D.C., and he had previously lived in Wisconsin, per NBC News. Police believe he traveled from Wisconsin to Providence ahead of the shooting.

In a press conference on Sunday night, officials said they will be releasing the individual they detained. The gunman remains at large.

Police indicated they have remained working in tandem with the FBI during the investigation, with a search at a home in Wisconsin.

Officials say the person in surveillance footage is who they believe is the shooter, but not the individual they detained.

The abandoned vehicle they found had a license plate that matched one of the plates of a vehicle they believe the suspect was using.

The suspect likely spent time in the area of campus where the shooting occurred, given that he studied physics while enrolled at the university.

Authorities are investigating possible ties between the suspect and the killing of an MIT professor in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday. Officials said they believe Claudio Neves Valente attended the same university in Lisbon, Portugal, as Nuno Loureiro, the deceased MIT professor.

Officials say a witness who interacted with the suspect in Providence shortly after the shooting came forward to police and described the exchange. The witness reportedly asked Valente why he was near the university, and he accused the witness of harassment before running away.

Valente was ultimately found dead in a storage unit he rented with a firearm near his thigh and another near his feet.

Officials said Valente's last known address was in Miami. He flew to Providence in October and traveled throughout New England.

In November, Valente rented a hotel in Boston, per officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts. He then rented a gray Nissan Sentra on December 1st, and on the same day he drove to the vicinity of Brown University, where his car was observed intermittently leading up to the shooting.

Between December 13th to 14th, Valente returned to Massachusetts. [On December 15th, he fatally shot Nuno Loureiro,](https://go.citizen.com/MzJUDZhUcZb) a 47-year-old professor at MIT, officials said.

At some point while he was in Massachusetts, he switched plates on the rented Sentra to an unregistered Maine plate.

Immediately after the murder, he drove to the storage facility, which he had rented in November.

Officials said they linked Valente to the two crimes through the car, financial investigations, and videos.

Along with other evidence, footage showed that Valente wore the same clothes after he allegedly murdered the professor when he entered the storage unit.

The link between the crimes was established in the last 24-48 hours, officials said. Valente was using a phone that obfuscated the ability to track it, and used credit cards not tied to his name. Officials noted that he was "sophisticated" in evading capture and hiding his tracks.

Officials said they believe that the shooter and the professor knew each other. His motives are still pending investigation.
