He then rented a gray Nissan Sentra on December 1st, and on the same day he drove to the vicinity of Brown University, where his car was observed intermittently leading up to the shooting.

At some point while he was in Massachusetts, he switched plates on the rented Sentra to an unregistered Maine plate.

Immediately after the murder, he drove to the storage facility, which he had rented in November.

Officials said they linked Valente to the two crimes through the car, financial investigations, and videos.

Along with other evidence, footage showed that Valente wore the same clothes after he allegedly murdered the professor when he entered the storage unit.

The link between the crimes was established in the last 24-48 hours, officials said. Valente was using a phone that obfuscated the ability to track it, and used credit cards not tied to his name. Officials noted that he was "sophisticated" in evading capture and hiding his tracks.

Officials said they believe that the shooter and the professor knew each other. His motives are still pending investigation.
