Five men were injured in an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and police in Inwood Monday morning, police said. 

At around 4 a.m., police were patrolling near West 211th Street and 10th Avenue when they saw a group of men arguing outside of 11:11 Restaurant and Lounge. 

In a [press briefing](https://twitter.com/NYPDnews/status/1442461557536010241?s=20), NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said the officers exited their vehicle, approached the group, and spoke with a security guard who was diffusing the situation. 

The group walked to the corner of the block, where one of the men fired gunshots, striking four men, according to the [AP](https://apnews.com/article/shootings-new-york-manhattan-4e83fc287f179ceb97dcc75a8d8f14fa).

Officers took cover and then returned fire, striking the gunman. 

The suspect was transported to an area hospital and taken into surgery. His gun was recovered from the scene. 

The other four men were transported to area hospitals, and Holmes stated their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. 

No officers were injured. 

An investigation is ongoing.
