Police are searching for a suspect who fired a gun in the heart of Times Square Sunday evening, injuring a U.S. marine with a stray bullet.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., officers responded to 911 calls of a man shot near W. 45th Street and 7th Avenue, police said in an update.

Officers at the scene located a 21-year-old man who’d been shot in the back. 

EMS transported him to a local hospital in stable condition.

Police said the victim was a bystander and was shot by an unidentified male suspect who fled eastbound on 45th Street toward 6th Avenue after the shooting.

According to [reports](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/police-search-for-shooter-who-injured-tourist-walking-with-family-in-times-square/3127758/) citing police, the shooting followed an argument between street vendors. A small group of about six people selling CDs under the Marriott Marquis sign got into an argument and one person in the group pulled out a gun and fired a single shot.

The victim was standing nearby outside of a Starbucks. He has been identified as a recent graduate of the The Citadel, a senior military college for Marines, who was visiting the city with his family.

He is expected to recover.

Marine Injured in Times Square Shooting, Police Searching for Suspect

A 911 caller has reported hearing gunfire in the vicinity. This is unconfirmed.

Police have closed traffic on W 45th St and 7th Ave to investigate an unconfirmed report of gunfire in the area.

The address reported for this incident has changed to W 45th St & 7th Ave.

Police have advised a man has been found with gunshot wounds.

Police have not provided a suspect description.

Police are looking for two men who fled on foot from W 45th St towards W 46th St.

Police have requested an expedited ambulance to the scene.

Additional officers are responding to assist in a search for the two men.

Police have closed W 45th St between 7th Ave and 8th Ave to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Police state the man is conscious and was struck in the back.
