A man wielding a sharp object was fatally shot by officers inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on Thursday night, officials said.

Police had a standoff with the individual, who had barricaded himself inside a hospital room with two other people inside. Officials said he had made threats to harm himself and others.

Officers arriving to the scene observed blood splattered across the floor and walls of the room.

Police shot a man who was allegedly wielding a knife inside the emergency room at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, per officials.

Police initially received a 911 call describing a man barricading himself inside a hospital room with an elderly patient, per the New York Post.

After an altercation with the man, officers tried to tase him, but it had no effect, per witnesses. Two officers then discharged their weapons, striking him.

The man is in critical condition. Four officers were also being treated for tinnitus, per the New York Post.

In a Thursday night press conference, NYPD officials said they initially received multiple 911 calls of a violent man armed with a knife who had barricaded himself inside a room on the 8th floor. He was reportedly trying to cut himself and other people, along with threatening the staff.

Police said they found blood splattered all over the floor and walls, and the subject approached the door frame and displayed the bloody weapon.

Officers then issued multiple verbal commands, after which the suspect attempted to close the door while two other people were trapped inside.

When the subject stepped toward the officer with the weapon in his hands, police simultaneous discharged a taser and a service weapon. He then closed the door again.

Officers again tried to kick down the door and issue verbal commands. When the man approached the officers again with the weapon—which appears to have been some kind of sharp object—officers opened fire. Police say he has been pronounced dead.
