According to officials, a 19-year-old man used a machete to attack three NYPD officers outside a Times Square security checkpoint at approximately 10:11 p.m. Saturday, December 31st, 2022. 

One of the involved officers returned fire with their service weapon, striking the suspect in the shoulder. 

The suspect inflicted a skull fracture and large laceration to a rookie officer, and a  head laceration to another officer.

The officers were rushed to city hospitals where all three are reported to be in stable condition. 

The suspect was also transported to a city hospital.

This incident is under investigation with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Taskforce. 

Officials believe that there is no ongoing public safety threat; this was reportedly a sole actor. 

Three Officers Injured in Machete Attack, Suspect Shot

Police are requesting additional units to assist at the scene of a crowd. A 911 caller reported that pedestrians were pushing down a barrier at the location.

Police are advised that an officer reportedly got stabbed at the scene. Additional police units are en route.

Additionally, shots were reportedly fired. According to a 911 caller.

Police on the scene have confirmed that an officer has been stabbed. EMS is requested to aid the injured officer.

Officers are requesting additonal units to shut down W 52nd St and 8th Ave.

Police advise two officers are injured. It is unclear if the second officer was also stabbed.

Police advise both the injured officers are being transported to local hospitals.

Police advise they are not searching for any suspects.

The officers have been transported to the scene and are headed to city hospitals, under escort.

According to the police communications, they confirm that the suspect is in custody.

Officers on the scene clarify that the suspect they have in custody is not related to the incident.

Police advise that one of the officers was struck by a vehicle.

Officers on the scene have requested additional units to set up a perimeter.

According to authorities, at 10:11 p.m., outside a security entrance to Times Square New Year’s Eve’s festivities, a 19-year-old man struck three officers with a machete. One NYPD officer fired their service weapon, striking the suspect in the shoulder. The police were rushed to city hospitals and all three are in stable condition.
